Transmission & clutch

Gearbox and clutch problems can be small or serious, and guessing is expensive. We check the basics first, explain the likely cause and what it costs before any work.

Signs you may need this

  • Gears slipping or the engine revving without speed
  • Hard or delayed shifts
  • Delay when you select drive or reverse
  • Burning smell
  • Clutch pedal high, soft or shuddering
  • Red or brown fluid under the car

If the car slips badly or will not move, avoid driving it. Further driving can turn a small repair into a large one.

What we check

  • Fluid level and condition
  • Stored trouble codes
  • Clutch feel and engagement
  • Leaks, mounts and linkage

How it works

  1. We check fluid, codes and clutch operation and test drive if it is safe.
  2. We explain the likely cause and give a written estimate.
  3. You approve. Then we repair and road test the car.

Transmission & clutch FAQ

Does the transmission fluid always need changing?

Follow your owner’s manual. Some cars have long intervals and some need it sooner if used for towing or heavy stop-start driving.

Is it safe to drive with a slipping transmission?

It is best not to. Slipping generates heat and wear, so a small problem can grow quickly. Contact us and describe what is happening.

Will you repair it or replace it?

That depends on the diagnosis. We explain the options and the cost of each before you decide.
